As winter comes to a close on San Antonio Bay, our favorite neighbors are gearing up for spring: the Whooping Cranes. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is world-famous as the winter nesting ground of the last wild flock of this majestic bird. Once down to just 14 birds worldwide, extensive protection and repopulation efforts have the Whooping Crane population back up to healthier numbers.
By the end of November, Whooping Crane experts had already counted a new record total of 224 birds in this year’s migrating flock. According to the experts, 182 adults and 42 juvenile birds made the flight from their nesting grounds in Canada’s Northwest Territories throughout October and November. The 2500-mile trek across Canada and the U.S. can take migration groups anywhere from 15 to 40 days.
From now through April, these amazing birds can be seen throughout the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, on the banks of the Intracoastal Waterway, as well as in our newly-designated Whooping Crane habitat preserve. We’ve set aside 1200 acres of Falcon Point Ranch to help ensure these majestic birds will always have a place here on San Antonio Bay. The dramatic calls that earned the Whooping Crane its name can even be heard echoing across the bay and property.
Schedule your visit to Falcon Point Ranch now, and join us for a rare chance to see this majestic, endangered species for yourself. |
